The Project Part Definition contains a list of all the different part revisions used in the project product structure, and shows the number of item occurrences per part revision.
The Project Part Definition eases the process of approving project items and replacing
part revisions.
By using the available menu options for Project Part Definition you can approve or replace
all occurrences of a part revision in one concurrent operation.
Manual insert are not allowed. When an item with a new part revision is inserted in the project, a record is automatically created in Part Definition, with occurrences set to 1. For each item with same revision that is inserted in the project, the number of occurrences is incremented. Likewise, when an item is deleted from the project, the number of occurrences is decreased. When the last item of a part revision is deleted from the project, the occurrences will have a value of 0.
When a project item is deleted, the number of occurrences is automatically updated in Project Part Definition. Old revisions will exist in Project Part Definition with document survey, even if all project items with that revision are modified or removed. The documentation for old releases can be valuable, even if the part revision no longer exists as a project item.
Documents that are common for all the occurrences of the part revision should be connected to the part definition, while documents that are specific for an item should be connected to the item. In Project Item/Total Doc. Survey all documents are listed, and the column Connected Object Type tells whether the document is connected to the item (Project Product Structure), to the part definition (Project Part Definition).
When a new part number is inserted in the project, the document requirements for the part definition are copied from the profile for that part in IFS/PDM Configuration. (See Part/Engineering/Part Detail for more information). If the part already exists in the project, but with a different revision, the document requirements for the previous revision is used.
