Add Structure Position
Explanation
This activity is used to add a new structure position to a template
structure. A structure position can be added to a template structure as a result
of an embodied modification or an internal requirement aimed at better control
of the template structure by further detailing the configuration. A new
structure position can be added to a template structure by using one of the
following methods:
- Add a new structure position that will receive the Preliminary
status, after which you can build the configuration of the newly
added structure position. You must set the structure position to the
Active status for it to have any effect on a serial structure.
- Add a new structure position that will receive the
Active status at creation, and is immediately valid for use.
- Add a structure position previously removed from the template structure.
The status of this structure position should be the same as the status of
the template structure to which it is added. An active structure position
that has been removed can be connected to a template structure that is in
either the Preliminary or Active status.
When a new structure position is activated or when an already active structure position is added to
an active template, an empty structure position will be created automatically in
all serial structures using the template to which the structure position was
added. Empty structure positions are used to indicate where expected parts or
serials are missing from the serial structure. After you add a structure
position to a template, you can install a part or serial into the empty
structure position in the serial structure that is using the changed
template. This can be done by performing the appropriate structure change, e.g.,
the Install Serial assistant can be used to install a serial into the
structure.
Before you can install a new serial into a serial structure, the template
structure must be updated with a new structure position. If the new structure
position is part of the minimum configuration, and serial structures exist for
the template structure, the operational condition for the relevant entries in
the serial structure will be changed to Non Operational.
If the Access Control functionality is used, when a new structure position is
added to the template structure, the part access will be updated and it will
receive access from the template part. When you add a structure position that
was previously removed, and disconnected serials exist in the structure, it will
keep the serial access received prior to its removal from the template.
Therefore, when this structure position is added to a template structure the
serial access will be updated. You can view the access groups defined for the
part used in the structure position in the Part Access tab found
in both the Serial Structure Template and Template Structure
Navigator windows.
If IFS/Complex Assembly MRO is used, the structure
position will be transferred automatically to manufacturing when activated.
Following criteria must be fulfilled for automatic part transfer to
manufacturing:
- The value of the AUTO_TRANSFER_STR object
property is set to TRUE.
- The parent template is already transferred.
- A unique catalog number is entered for the
structure position.
- The structure position is activated.
- The site to which the structure position is to be
transferred is a site to which the logged-on user is allowed.
Prerequisites
- The template structure must have been set to the
Active status.
- A new structure position must be defined or a previously removed structure
position must exist.
- In addition, if a new structure position is introduced by a modification
this structure change must have been entered on the modification (while it
is in the Preliminary status). For more information, refer the
Define a New Structure Position
activity.
System Effects
- The new structure position is added to the template structure and can be
installed in serial structures. If the new structure position has the Preliminary
status, it must be activated in order to become a valid position for use in
the template.
- An empty structure position will be added to all
serial structures using the template to which the new structure position was
added. If the structure position was introduced by a modification, the empty
position will be added once the modification is embodied.
- If the new structure position is part of the minimum configuration,
existing serial structures will become unusable until the newly added
structure position exists in all serial structures.
- Access groups for the parts will be updated.
- Access groups for existing serials will be updated.
If IFS/Complex Assembly MRO is used, and all criteria
for automatic part transfer is fulfilled:
- A position part is generated for the structure
position at all user-allowed sites to which the parent template is
successfully transferred. This includes all instances where the structure
position is valid for use.
- The phase in date of the position part is set to
the latest phase in date of the parent part.
- For all relevant top parts, the temporary transfer
table is updated with the new position part and corresponding real and
alternate parts.
- Modifications applicable for the new structure
position are transferred to manufacturing for user-allowed sites. That is, active modifications
where the given part is defined as an assigned part revision, where affected
parts are defined, and the modification is not yet transferred.
- The position part is added as a component line to
the latest Disassembly and Assembly structures of the parent position part. In
addition, if If the position part has a structure, Disassembly and Assembly
structures are created for the position part.
- Disposition and repair structures and routings are
created for the position part (and its structure).
- A record is generated in the template transfer
history to indicate the success or failure of the part transfer.

Procedure
Follow this procedure to add a new structure position to
an existing template structure:
- Open the
Serial Structure Template or the
Template
Structure Navigator window.
- In the Part Number field,
query (F3) for the required template structure.
- Click the
Consist Of tab.
(The Multilevel tab can be selected as well, provided that you
have chosen the
Serial Structure Template window to perform
this procedure.)
- Right-click and then click Add Structure Position. The
Add Structure Position
dialog box opens.
- In the Structure Position field, enter a unique
value for the new structure position or click List to select a
structure position that was previously removed from the selected structure. If a
value is not entered in this field, a new structure position is
generated automatically.
- In the Part No field, select the new part number
for the structure. Click List to select a value. When a value is
selected for this field, the part revision appears automatically in the
corresponding field.
- In the Position field, enter a unique value for the part number in the structure. Also, enter a value in the
Quantity field for the quantity of this part. Note: The quantity you
define can only exceed one (1), for the lowest level in
the structure.
- Select a suitable value from the Life Limited Part
list. If the same value exists for the life limited part of the new
structure position and the serial part, entering a value in this field is
optional.
- In the Catalog No field, enter the required
catalog number. A catalog number is required if the structure position is to
be transferred to manufacturing, and must be unique within the structure of
the top part.
- The check boxes in the Connect To Template
Structure area illustrate how particular data for the new structure
position can be defined. Following is a list of the available check boxes
together with a description of what each check box is used to accomplish:
- Is part of the Minimum
Configuration? - This check box can be selected if you want the new part
number and structure position to be included in the minimum
configuration of the template.
- Create as separate template? - Select this check box if the
new part is to be created as a separate template.
- Allow Non Unique Catalog Numbers -
Select this check box if non-unique catalog numbers are to be allowed
for the new template. By default, this check box will gets the same
setting as its parent.
- Grant access to not installed serials?
- Select this check box if you want disconnected serials (i.e., the
serials for the part numbers that are assigned to the template structure
of the new position) to automatically receive the template's access
group(s).
- Activate Structure Position - Select
this check box if the new structure position is to be created in the
Active status. The default setting of this check box is controlled
by the ADD_STR_POS_SETTING object property. If the property value
is set to TRUE, this check box is selected automatically.
- Click OK.
Follow this procedure to add a new structure position that is introduced by a
modification:
- Open the
Define Modification
window
and query (F3) for the required modification revision.
- Click the
Structure Impacts tab and
then click the
Template Changes
sub tab.
- Select the necessary row (containing the structure
impact type New Structure Position), right-click and then click
Add Position to Template. The
Add Structure Position
dialog box opens with the new structure position registered on the
modification.
- If needed, enter suitable values in the
Position and Quantity fields. Note that the quantity you define
can only exceed one (1), for the lowest level in the structure.
- Select a suitable value from the Life Limited
Part list.
- Is this part of the Minimum Configuration?
- This check box can be selected if you want the new part number and
structure position to be included in the minimum configuration of the
template.
- Create as separate template? - Select
this check box if the new part is to be created as a separate template.
