Add Handling Unit to Inventory or Shipment

Explanation

This activity is used to create a handling unit structure consisting of one or multiple handling unit levels connected to a shipment or in inventory. A handling unit is a device that can be handled physically and may carry/contain other handling units or items in a structure.

There are three types of handling units:

• Homogenous Handling Unit, where all the handling units contain the same item.
• Mixed Handling Unit, where the handling unit(s) contain varying items.
• Simplified Handling Unit, a handling unit with no sub handling units connected and only contain one item.

The basic data for handling unit types must be created before you can add them to the structure.

Note: When changes are made to the handling unit structure, it is important to reprint documents and labels. This will therefore ensure, correct documents and labels that include information based on the changed structure.

Prerequisites

• At least one handling unit type must have been defined in the basic data.

System Effects

• Handling units will be entered on the handling unit structure.

Note: In inventory handling units are used for packing parts. When packed, operations like move, pick, issue etc. can be performed on the handling unit rather than one the individual inventory part in stock record. On the shipment handling units are also used for packing, either by delivering the handling unit from inventory or by doing specific packing on the shipment. The information regarding the handling units is then sent to customer using the dispatch advice message, to advise the customer about the specific handling unit IDs that will be shipped.

Procedure

From Handling Unit window:

1. Open the Handling Unit window.
2. Query for an existing handling unit.
3. Click the Structure tab to view the handling unit structure details.
4. Right-click on the handling unit and and then click Add Handling Unit(s).
5. Click New, to activate a new row.
6. Enter a handling unit type ID or select a value from the List of Values. The name of the handling unit type appears automatically.
7. Enter the number of units.
8. Click OK to save the row.

From Shipment window:

1. Open the Shipment window.
2. Query for a specific shipment ID.
3. Click the Handling Unit Structure tab to view the handling unit structure details.
4. Expand the shipment ID by selecting it.
5. Right-click on the handling unit and and then click Add Handling Unit(s).
6. Click New, to activate a new row.
7. Enter a handling unit type ID or select a value from the List of Values. The name of the handling unit type appears automatically.
8. Enter the number of units.
9. Click OK to save the row.
