Define a Serial Range

Explanation

Use this activity to define serial ranges for the serial numbers that are to be assigned to the selected modification revision, when the status of the modification is set to Active.

There are three parameters that define how a serial number range is specified. These parameters can be updated in the Configuration Basic Data/Object Property tab. The following table shows all the default parameter values:

Parameter Value Description
FROM_TO_SERIAL_RANGE .. Specifies a from/to serial number range. Example: Enter the value sn3..sn9 to specify serial numbers sn3, sn4, sn5, sn6, sn7, sn8 and sn9.
SEP_SERIAL_RANGE ; Separator for separating several single serial numbers. Example: Enter the value sn1;sn12;sn17 to specify three specific serial numbers.
ALL_SERIAL_RANGE % All serial numbers for the given part number.

Therefore, according to the default parameter values described in the above table, the serial number range can be defined using any of the following formats:

  1. Select several single serial numbers using the value defined for SEP_SERIAL_RANGE - sn1;sn12;sn17
  2. Select a range of serial numbers using the value defined for FROM_TO_SERIAL_RANGE - sn3..sn9
  3. A combination of point 1 and point 2 - sn1;sn3..sn9;sn12;sn17
  4. Select serial numbers with prefix NO- using the value defined for ALL_SERIAL_RANGE - NO-%
  5. Select serial numbers with suffix -XX using the value defined for ALL_SERIAL_RANGE - %-XX
  6. Select all serial numbers for a part number using the value defined for ALL_SERIAL_RANGE - %

The definition of a serial number range can be performed manually by generating numerical serial numbers or using relevant menu options to add, change or remove a serial range (for more information refer the online help file Add, Remove or Change Serial Number Range.)

The value you enter in the Serial No Range field is not validated.

All serial number ranges are regarded as alphanumeric characters. Consequently, unusual results may be generated when you create a serial range consisting of numeric characters only. To prevent such results, you have the option of defining a serial number range for numerical serial numbers - Generate Numeric Serial Range.

Procedure

Use the following procedure to define a serial number range:

  1. Open the Define Modification window.
  2. In the Mod Code field, query (F3) for the modification for which a serial range is to be defined.
  3. Click the Serial Range tab.
  4. Create a new record (F5).
  5. Enter the part number in the Part Number field. Use the List of Values to select a value.
  6. In the Serial No Range field, enter the required serial range. This range will filter the serials that can be assigned to the modification.
  7. Save the record (F12).

Use the following procedure to generate a numerical serial number range:

  1. Open the Define Modification window.
  2. In the Mod Code field, query (F3) for the modification for which a numerical serial range is to be defined.
  3. Click the Serial Range tab.
  4. Right-click and then click Generate Numeric Serial Range. The Generate Numerical Serial Ranges dialog box will open.
  5. In the Part Number field, specify the part number for which the serial range is to be generated. Click List to select a valid value.
  6. Specify the serial number range in the From Serial Number and To Serial Number fields.
  7. If a prefix or suffix is required for these serial numbers, enter the appropriate values in the Prefix and Suffix fields.
  8. Click OK.
