To define a modification program, the definition of the modification must first be registered. After entering data about the modification, you may continue with assigning parts, part revisions and detailed information for each assigned part revision to the modification. For more information on how to define the modification program, refer to the online help file Modification Program.
When you define a modification, you must indicate the category of the modification. There are three possible alternatives; Optional, Recommended and Mandatory. When the modification is set to category Optional, the serials assigned to the modification will be set to Not to be Performed, but you may change this value. If the category is set to be Recommended, the serials assigned to the modification will be set to To be Performed, but you may also change this value. The last category Mandatory, will set all assigned serials to be To be performed. When a modification is mandatory, it is not allowed to change the assigned serials to Not to be Performed.
The assignment type defined for the modification, decides which serials will be assigned to the modification when the modification is set to be active. There are three possible alternatives; By Revision All Serials, By Serial Range and Documentation. The last alternative Documentation, is an exception and is not used to assign serials. This assignment type is described below.
If the modification is defined with assignment type By Revision All Serials, all serials with part number and revision defined for the modification are assigned. If the modification is defined with By Serial Range, all serials with serial numbers defined in the serial ranges for the modification will be assigned. The last assignment type Documentation, is used for modifications that affect documentation. Modifications defined with assignment type Documentation, do not require any changes to the actual components. Some examples of this, can be modifications that request documentation, service manuals etc. to be updated. The procedure on how to update the manuals can be entered as free text
If the modification work is supposed to result in part identity change on a part assigned to or affected by the modification, you have the facility to register the new part number and/or revision on the assigned or the affected serial. Note: The new part number and revision of the serial can only be entered when the modification is in the Preliminary status. Once the modification is embodied the serial on which the part identity change took place will be renamed automatically to include the new part number and revision. For more information on the Rename Serial functionality, refer to the about description Rename Serial.
The Supersede Rule option controls the behavior of assigned and already complied with serials when the modification supersedes another modification. This attribute only has an effect if the modification supersedes another modification. This attribute can be selected when you need to comply with the new modification revision as well as the old one.
The Keep Perform Modification Definitions option can be used to copy Perform Modifications (i.e., serial assignment) from one revision of a modification to another. This option only has an effect if the modification category of the old and new revision is the same and if no references exist to a different modification. When the new revision of the modification is activated, the Perform Modification changes will be applied to the serials assigned to this new revision. The Keep Perform Modification Definitions option cannot be used in together with the Supersede Rule option.
If you define a modification revision with the possibility of Quick Reporting, you can complete this modification without generating pending tasks.
When the modification work has been completed for a modification defined with assignment type Documentation, the modification should be signed off. When signing off the modification, the Sign Off Date and Sign Off By will be updated with today's date and the users signature. The modification must be Active before it can be signed off.
